Hard Drive Capacity History from 1996 to 2021.

Capacity growth has slowed some for capacity HDD's but it has come a long way since 1996. 25 years ago the largest HDD, 23GB, was just announced by Seagate as the Elite 23. This particular drive had 14 platters, 28 heads packed into a 5.25-inch form-factor. Interface was SCSI or FC. Fast forward to today with capacity enterprise hard drives now in production at 18TB with 20TB+ soon to come. With the huge growth of data forecasted the world will certainly need these large drives to store all of the bits and bytes our world continues to generate! In 2020 the industry shipped a whopping 1Z of HDD storage capacity! The three HDD suppliers WD, Toshiba and Seagate continue to thrive in the HDD space and are working hard to develop clever techniques to expand storage capacities per platter and per drive. Can't wait to see what is next! #avnetintegrated #storage #hdd #avnet
