There are many great examples of how your mindset is related to your results in business, but Tilman Fertitta, the owner of the Houston Rockets, is one of my favorites. His story of turning a $6,000 loan into billions is a direct result of his hard work, passion, and endless perspective of gratitude. Here are four guiding principles that he lives by that will help anyone to achieve success and take their business to the next level:
Discover and make use of our God-given gifts
Tilman believes that God gives us all certain gifts, and the smartest thing we can do is realize what those gifts are. Whether we find we have talent for art, playing an instrument, or running a business, pursuing that gift regardless of the monetary payoffs is essential and will allow us to truly excel. It’s not always about making the most money. When we take full advantage of our God-given gifts, we will find success.?

Never live above our means
Many people tend to live above their means, gambling away their money, spending unnecessarily, and making bad financial decisions. They start to drink their own Kool Aid, believing that they are smarter than others because they may have pulled off a big deal. However, we must not buy into our own falsehoods. We must stay grounded and remember to have humility when it comes to our spending habits.
Build a good culture
Tilman prides himself on the loyal and unchanging culture that he has created. When we show up for our team consistently, we will receive the same commitment back and create a culture that continuously supports each other. A good culture will take a business far because people are what business is about. We can’t do everything by ourselves. Showing gratitude will also help to strengthen our culture. Demonstrating stability and gratitude as a leader will position us to forge an undeniably faithful and supportive culture that lasts.
Respect money and give back
It’s always nice to be able to own nice things and enjoy them on occasion, but we also must respect our money by not obtaining luxury just for show. Tilman respects money because he knows it is hard to earn, having worked his way up. If we save, we can do great things when the opportunity arises, but we also must make sure we do things for ourselves and not the opinions of others. Live well, but don’t show off. Respecting money also involves giving back and being charitable. Having money does not make us above anything, and helping to make a positive impact on society is the best way to show respect.
