Empowering Women Through Time: The Dynamic Evolution of International Women's Day"

By Joanne Macris

International Women's Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, has a long and storied history that has evolved over the years. The day serves as a reminder of the social, economic, and political struggles women have faced, and the progress made towards gender equality.

The earliest observance of Women's Day dates back to the early 1900s in the United States and Europe, where women were fighting for their right to vote, work, and be treated equally in society. The first National Women's Day was observed in the United States on February 28th, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America to commemorate a garment workers' strike in New York City.

In 1910, an International Women's Conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it was suggested that a Women's Day be held annually to advocate for women's rights and suffrage. The following year, on March 19th, 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with over a million people attending rallies and demonstrations.

Throughout the years, International Women's Day became a day for women to come together and demand equality in all aspects of life, including the right to work, education, and political participation. The day was celebrated in various countries, and different themes emerged, such as the struggle for reproductive rights, the fight against gender-based violence, and the demand for equal pay.

In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized International Women's Day, and since then, the day has been celebrated around the world with different themes and slogans each year. In recent years, the #MeToo movement and the fight against sexual harassment and assault have taken centre stage, with International Women's Day becoming a platform for women to speak out against gender-based violence and discrimination.

Today, International Women's Day is celebrated in over 100 countries, with various events, marches, and demonstrations taking place around the world. The day serves as a reminder of the progress made towards gender equality, but also the work that still needs to be done to ensure that women's rights are protected and respected.

International Women's Day has a rich history that has evolved over time, reflecting the social and political struggles that women have faced throughout history. Today, the day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of gender equality and the ongoing fight for women's rights.
