Maybe it’s time to consider claiming your online space… (Even if you have an existing website)
Personal, or portfolio, websites are all the rage overseas when it comes to rendering contract work and services.?It is an opportunity to reach more people with your work, showcase your creativity and expertise and is an extension of your personality.?Even job hunters are using their personal portfolio spaces to showcase their best qualities and skills.
A personal website will increase your presence, bring attention to your work and land you more contracts.
However!!!!
You can easily ruin your chances of getting attention and contracts by just slapping together something with a few images and a contact number.?Putting yourself online does not guarantee anything.?You also need to please the SEO gods otherwise your website will land on page 1,259,877 of a Google search.
One of the main development challenges we encounter when building a new site is the client.?Yes, the client!
Let me explain.??
The first question we ask a client is: Who is the market you are serving? In other words, who will be using your website??The second question is: What are your operational requirements? In other words, what must the website do for you?
Mostly clients answer these questions by explaining to us how the website should look, even sending us examples.?When it comes to websites, the user that visits your website rules.?So, in other words, you have to design a website that your user likes and finds easy to use.
Normally the viewpoint of the website owner and the user differ completely.?First impressions are also a rule for websites.?I was recently asked by a creative writer to give my opinion on his website.?My answer: It looks like a car dealership. (I did use a brand name, which I will not mention here.?Needless to say it was a cheap brand)?

Most important is that your website is mobile friendly.?Most searches and online sales are on mobile devices.?One of my own little frustrations is when I search for something and I have to click 3, 4, 5 times to get to a contact number.?Then, because there is no appropriate mobile link on that number, I have to mark and copy it and paste it into my phone’s dialer.?Even worse, when sending a Whatsapp, you first have to create a contact and then send a message.?By this time most people will move on to the next business that came up on the google search.
Lastly showcasing your services is not talking about yourself and how good and educated you are.?People are searching for solutions for their problems, not which tertiary institution you attended.?Always lead with the solutions you provide.?Your credentials should be featured a bit lower on the page maybe even in a menu link.?
