California leads the way

The golden state has been busy this year, as befits the world’s fourth-largest economy. California’s new climate disclosure requirements are the first of their kind in the United States and will require companies doing business in California to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks. Employee noncompetes have always been disfavored in California, but now they are downright illegal in many cases. Starting next year, a new statute will consider employee non competes to be a violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law, meaning that an employee can sue an employer who tries to enforce an invalid noncompete. ?

At the federal level, the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) is coming. ?Starting January 1, 2024, new companies must disclose beneficial owners. The rules are more complex and counter intuitive than you might think as shown here.

New private fund adviser rules place new requirements on venture fund managers. Understanding the new SEC rules requires a bit of reading between the lines as show in this video clip.
