Happy Second Anniversary to the people who made Canadian legalization of recreational cannabis real!
Shane Morris
Chief Executive Officer at Morris and Associates Consulting and COO of Pharmala Biotech
Every year on October 17th much is written about the past and future of cannabis in Canada. What is often missed is to remember the efforts of those who made the actual day of legalization work – October 17, 2018. It is easy to forget that there was close to no infrastructure, no systems, no value chain, no experience, no slow roll out for legal cannabis. There was just lots of uncertainty and a promise that cannabis would be sold federally coast to coast to coast in Canada on October 17, 2018
What I celebrate on October 17th are the people who made it happen. The people, albeit in different companies and organisations, who shared the drive and determination to get it done. They share memories of working twenty-hour days for months on end, long days and longer nights, impossible deadlines, sacrificing family time, and solving problems no-one had ever seen before. This was not simply a CPG (consumer packaged goods) retail challenge; it was a massive, once in a lifetime, ‘make history happen’ national campaign.
Everyone played a role. The cleaners, the trimmers, the security guards, the growers, the harvest teams, the packing teams, the processing teams, the logistic teams, the QA/QC teams, the mechanics, the sales teams, the administrative staff, the regulatory affairs teams, the public servants, the new retail staff, the project managers, the IT crowd, the marketing teams, the legal teams, the HR staff, and many more made the day happen. Yes, tears where shed, families missed, tempers lost, mistakes made, perfection not attained but, in the end, Canada was ready enough.
The shared experiences in the trenches that made October 17, 2018 ‘just’ happen is something to celebrate. It will bind together those of us who were there, forever. So, for those who made that day a success against all odds, this is your day. Take a minute to remember where you were and who you were with when you made history. Never forget it because you, the head-down-get-it-done folks, made it happen. Happy Second Canna-versary to you all!

Terry, Bruce, Dieter, Tom, you Shane, Eric, Holland, Israel, California and how many more?? - Thank you each and all. Atm I am listening to Hozier singing about people standing up and forcing the jackboot to jump, “... good things are happening when the jackboot needs to jump!” Thanks to Canada’s leadership. Thanks also on October 17 in this terrible year to the people and Government of New Zealand for making the job of the far right so much more difficult. As to business, I remember teaching the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People to an executive team from IBM in the middle of the .com bubble as they argued if that was or was not, the right time to launch IBM.com Innovation must have its ups and downs, otherwise it would be easy. Started by heroes. Those who take the beach are not the ones who then build the fort and then the commerce. Shane, well said, hats off to the heroes.
