Leaders of two biggest democracies - India (by number of voters) & US (by size of economy and country) are enjoying India's Republic day celebration - it is a matter of great pride for all people of Indian origin that despite all the problems, India is one of very few countries in the world that maintained a democracy, after the colonial power left - even while battling corruption, dire poverty, lack of education, caste system & more. The credit goes to selfless leaders of non-violent independence struggle who later laid the foundation for new India, on January 26, 1950. This is not the day the British left India (which is August 15, 1947). But this is the day the Constitution of India came into existence as the "governing document of India". Like the US Constitution & Bill of Rights, Indian Constitution is immensely thoughtful, fair, visionary, forward looking document and it is has guided India well. Even though it is a chaotic democracy with a billion people with major differences, wanting their say, in the end, in India, resolution comes from votes, through the voice of people! Go India, go motherland -- today uncle is celebrating with you -- that is, we all who have migrated to uncle Sam!!! The parade is as much a celebration of India's strength, courage & persistence, as it is of India's diversity and unity!
