A Happy prosperous and fulfilled life after Retrenchment
Have you given your all, sacrificed relationships on the altar of employment, abandoned family in the name of working?! You were an absent mum, dad, very devoted to work to bring the bacon home?! Boom!!! you are laid off work for one reason or another, for many, it is tantamount to being punched in the solar plexus or the very essence of you being/life being sucked out of you.
This should not be the case; it is all about perspective a glass half full perspective to be precise. Retrenchment should not be a death sentence for you nor the beginning of your end. Because, retrenchment is the best thing that can happen to you; yes, you, I hear you asking what in high- heaven have you been smoking?!!! Nothing I innocently retort but retrenchment can signal the beginning of a prosperous and fulfilling chapter in your life.
What I am saying? Despite the negative emotions going through your mind and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, being retrenched could be a blessing in disguise. It is a golden opportunity for you to finally work on your passion and fulfil your God-given purpose other than slaving for somebody else’s passion, dream/purpose.
As a highly entrepreneurial individual blessed with many years of experience and as a president of a fast-growing business networking chapter, the majority of the entrepreneurs I engage with, in the chapter and my public speaking engagements; freely disclose how retrenchment was the springboard to their entrepreneurial flair.
As a Christian Counsellor I am not oblivious to the various stages one oscillates through namely;
? Feelings of anger and betrayal: Many organizations are experiencing severe financial constraints as such most are downsizing making retrenchment inevitable leaving the affected employees miserable and bitter. Should you find yourself in this predicament it is always good to put things in their proper perspective and this way you are encouraged to positively move from the negative cycle of feeling betrayed, anger and bitterness.
? One experiences grieve: Losing a job is equal to losing a loved one. The best way to overcome grieve is accepting the inevitable and speaking to those that have gone through this. This is therapeutic in that you realize you are not alone and things have a way of working out despite your loss.
? Loss of Identity: Most people experience a deep source of identity partly because of the misplaced belief that one is synonymous with their job title. Truth be told, you are way much more than your job title and or qualification. Look deep within and you are bound to identify your true self and or a hidden/dormant talent that when effective utilized will sky rocket you to a higher, better much prosperous life and future.
Bearing in mind that a great percentage of workers hate what they do. The remedy to retrenchment is identifying your passion and embarking on utilizing your passion to make a profit. Alternatively finding out what most people are struggling with to take care of their pain areas and you are on your way to living a worthwhile life after retrenchment.
After identifying your passion one should purpose and focus on learning as much as you can so you become the go-to person the expert in your identified niche. Once you have attained this not only will you be profitable but will be well on your way to becoming an entrepreneur and get paid doing what you love most.
Finally just start; most failed business failed for lack of action. Therefore, just hop on the bus and get moving. You will be surprised how things start working out after activation albeit fearful of what lies ahead. As things work out, adopt an attitude of thanksgiving and appreciating life for it is still a beautiful place to be, regardless. Retrenchment should not mean the end of the world for you but rather the beginning of a new chapter in your life, a bend in the road, not the end. Keep living.
