George Washington's Birthday
On Presidents Day, Koch VETS will honor all those who have served as president of the United States. This federal holiday, formally known as Washington’s Birthday, is observed on the third Monday of February each year.?
In 1885, the U.S. Congress designated Washington’s Birthday a federal holiday. ?
Washington and Lincoln remain the two most recognized leaders during this holiday, but Presidents Day is now popularly seen as a day to recognize the lives and achievements of all of America’s chief executives. It is a special celebration for Koch VETS because we each had unique relationships with some of these men in their role as Commander in Chief of the U.S. armed forces.
In 1968 the holiday was adapted to also honor the birth of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and moved to the third Monday in February.
Presidents Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance. It is often used as a day for staging celebrations, reenactments, and other events. One tradition is to read George Washington’s Farewell Address, one of the greatest documents in American history. Ultimately, the day and the accompanying long weekend is a terrific time to reflect on the tremendous accomplishments of all our presidents.??
