Happy New Year

SGR’s 10 in 10 Note – Dec. 27, 2023

A new year is on the horizon. To quote Tennyson, it’s almost time to “ring out the old and bring in the new.”

In the U.S., New Year’s Eve (NYE) is usually an occasion for festivities and revelry. For many, fireworks are often a part of the event along with a kiss at midnight or a champagne toast. But others also incorporate traditions with origins in other parts of the world. Some have ties to those countries, but many do not.

Here are some of the ways people ring in the new year around the world:

In Scotland, NYE is known as Hogmanay. It comes with ancient traditions that have been passed down for centuries, including?first-footing?(the “first foot” in the house after midnight), thoroughly cleaning the house before NYE, and?putting coins outside to attract prosperity. According to superstition, the house should be cleaned before NYE, but don’t clean or take anything out after midnight or you’ll risk having your good luck in the new year be swept out, too. I know, it’s tricky.

Eating “lucky” foods seems to be a thing. The most prevalent food for this looks to be?grapes, 12 of them—no more, no less, to bring good luck in all 12 months of the coming year.?In the South, we have black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day?to bring good luck. Fortunately, it’s more of an all-you-can-eat proposition. ?

In many countries, they jump into a body of water to greet the new year. They do this on January 1, typically in some of the coldest countries on the planet. I have respect for this, but I’ll stick with the all-you-can-eat black-eyed peas.

In Latin America, some people walk around with an empty suitcase or put a piece of luggage out and walk around it to bring travel and adventure in the coming year. I like this one. It appeals to my wanderlust and puts a nice spin on dealing with one’s “baggage.”?New Year’s Traditions from Countries Around the World

Fire rituals and burn ceremonies seem popular. These are about setting intentions for the new year and releasing negative energy from the past year. This one has roots all over the world—from Brazil to Iceland. It’s sometimes called a?Burning Bowl Ceremony.

There are many ways to celebrate the new year:?15 New Year’s Eve Superstitions to Bring You Luck in 2024.?In whatever way you choose to bring in 2024, we here at SGR hope the new year brings you happiness, health, love, and laughter. Oh, and hope—always hope.

Happy New Year, everyone!
