A little too early to start the celebrations?
With the previous 10 months of this blink-of-an-eye year behind us, it does feel like we'll wake up tomorrow to Q1 2024. What can we expect?
Well, whilst we've all been familiar with algorithms for some time already, it feels like 2023 proactively added further grease to our already slick palms with the ultimate own-brand Savoury Yeast Paste; generative ai.
Bard and ChatGPT (respectively the Bovril and Marmite of their field) are now household names, making their way into debate, then conversation, then your favourite multilingual recruitment specialist's LinkedIn posts in the space of a few months.
I like to imagine that when humans first figured out how bang flints together and make a fire, that there was initially a whole load of resistance from the rolling a stick between your palms really quickly with the bottom end in kindling purist community. Or from the flint bashing purist community when matches first got on the scene; "it'll never catch on", they said, "it takes away from the authenticity of the fire".
2024 will be filled to the brim with SaaS innovation, with more pioneers incorporating generative ai into software solutions to save time on content production, decision making and generally making life that bit easier.
Human obsession with time-saving partners and tools have been the key to our development. Running is faster than walking, riding a horse is fast than walking and a Tesla Roadster is vastly quicker than our equestrian companions. I do like the concept of embracing some aspect of traditional living, but I'm not going to start walking from London to Manchester.
Creatively though, for whatever reason, content generating aritificial intelligence does intimidate me still. Cars, planes or the phantom of HS2 haven't made the art of running really fast completely obselete - so I try to apply logic to these feelings, because surely they can't replace the creativity of the human mind.
Imagine trying to explain the 2023 Writers Guild of America Strike to someone a hundred years ago, how would you even begin?*
* I do understand that safeguarding jobs from artificial intelligence was only a part of the reasons behind the strike.
More solutions facilitating the efficiency of businesses, more start-ups getting their funding rounds and more acquisitions; all equating to more businesses expanding into or within EMEA.
One thing that surprised me this year is multi-national businesses being surprised at the need to localise Sales and Marketing strategies - Euro London don't specialise in that niche of multilingual recruitment just for the fun of it.
It's true, a lot of the business world within EMEA will speak English. However, when you enter a new market and don't hire fluent Sales and Marketing talent then you are forcing your potential new clients to meet your product or service where you are.
You'll be a lot better off bringing your business to them. Cultural competency and linguistic competency go together, hence why even within the anglophone sphere content is localised to specific regions.
