Happy New Year?

That feeling that the euphoric holidays are ending and January is beginning can cause even the hardiest individual to pause.

Psychologist get busy in January when "real life" hits people. And those patients are the ones that reach out for help.

I hope you will do/focus on five things in January to combat the blues:

1) There is power in perspective. Write down five things you are thankful for every morning in a journal. It's fine to repeat them, but training your brain to see the good things in life is critical.

2) Choose some "micro" goals that will transform your life and move you closer to health and wealth. Example, join the gym or open the savings account. Then execute on the bigger goal. The journey starts with the first step.

3) Ask a friend out for coffee or dinner. Every interaction with a human doesn't have to have a specific purpose. There is power in community and humans have a deep seated need to break bread. And being a supportive friend to someone else can actually have a very positive impact on your own mental well being.

4) Reward yourself when you accomplish a big goal in your life. Go see a movie, take a hike, sleep in, buy that shirt you've wanted or eat that cookie. If we permit ourselves to have small rewards, life is much more pleasant and once again this trains our brains to focus on "micro positive" events.

5) Your Success Blesses Others. When you win in life, everyone from your business partners to your family win too. When you buy something with your "winnings" the retailer benefits. Winning is good for you AND everyone else in your life.

And speaking of psychologist, if you have a serious issue in your life, get help. There is no shame in this. After my Mom died a few years back, I got professional counseling for the first time in my life. It took some sessions and some hard work...but it WORKS! I am now in a much better and stable place, even though I still miss her mightly. There are tools to help you if you are in a tough spot...use them.

So, Happy New Year!

The punctuation at the end of the sentence is up to you!

I appreciate your point about human interaction. Other people are a joy, if we can only see them that way. I am excited about this year and the opportunity it holds for me to be better. I am energized to wake early and get to the office. Happy New Year!
