Happy New 2021!

So once again our planet has done its tour around the sun, Not the first or last, but surely one of the least fun.

It started out well, with new fresh decade on the go, But soon started tilting and tumbling, reaching for a new low.

Our biggest concern was climate change and global warming, With Greta as our champion, still on strike and informing. 

We had mad men in power playing by sandbox rules, Acting like grumpy six-year-olds, yes like downright fools.

Tweeting and shouting and stamping their feet, Of which of course media did not miss a beat.

Not a match made in heaven, no rather in hell, Anything Trump could tweet, CNN could sell.

Then suddenly, someone got bit by a bat, And everything and everyone had to change due to that.

“- Not to worry, it is all only over there,” Said westerners but no, soon it was everywhere.

Spreading like an evil diseased wind of change, And no-one, not even the arctic, was out of its range. 

Yes mad we went, totally off our rocker, Hoarding toilet paper? Now that was a shocker!

Inventing new words and expressions for times so dour, Like Superspreader, doomscrolling and virtual happy hour.

Flatten the curve, Zoom fatigue, lockdown, and quarantine, Not to forget "- Dude you’re on mute” and “- Can you see my screen?”

And just as we were getting used to staying off the street, We heard “Black lives matter!” and the sound of marching feet.

The biggest protest the US had ever seen, Echoing across the world, as if covid had never been.

But it was summer, and we had a lull in viral growth, Thanks to weather and outdoor activity, blessings both.

“-Ain’t so bad” people seemed to think, So they went back to eating out and having their drink.

Of course this was crazy, lest we get hit yet again, with a second big wave, adding to the suffering and pain.

Then one day in August, the ground shook and Beirut almost disappeared, “-It must be a bomb, a missile or terror attack” yes all the worst we feared.

But even though it was ammonium nitrate, used for bombs but also manure, The cause was lazy governance and stupidity simple and pure.

So came the autumn with us enduring that second wave, And suddenly the cocksure experts did not sound so brave. 

But the main event, the biggest show of the year, Was to see if the orange baby would be the one to lose or cheer.

And so it happened, he actually lost the peoples vote, But refused to accept, and retreated behind drawbridge and moat.

He was eyeing the others, his idols so rough, The Orbans and Putins, men of men, sturdy and tough. 

"- Why can't I like them, just do as I choose?", Whined Uncle Scam, who went from obstinate six to terrible twos. 

And just as we thought we’d seen the last of leadership idiocy, Sweden’s prime minister goes Christmas shopping, come on, seriously? 

So ending this off, this horrible year, Let us lay it to rest, let us mourn and shed a tear. 

For all that was broken, missed, cancelled and lost, And learn that leadership’s ignorance comes at a cost.

But with that behind us we can look forward anew, With amazing discoveries, like a vaccine for the flu.

And yes democracy lives, albeit torn and trashed, and climate change doubts are now finally smashed.

So, for me that will be the memory from this decade’s first year, Not the disasters, the pandemic or fear.

I’ll remember human compassion and our strength as a team, And our belief that we can make it better, as long as we dream.

So let us hang in there for the rest of this fight, And hold on to what is dear with all of our might,

Together we can do it, together we can pull through. It all comes down to us, to me and to you.
