??? Happy New Year to All Our Amazing Readers! ????

Greetings everyone,

?

December has now come and gone, and we enter a new year, which makes it a good time to take a closer look at how shoppers performed with their spending during the peak holiday.

?

?In 2024, the main answers to that question would be Chinese e-commerce platforms, social media platforms, and wherever the best discounts are.

As we enter 2025, let’s examine what happened in December to help us move forward with a positive perspective for the year ahead.

Chinese e-commerce captures more holiday spending in 2024

Temu, Shein, and Tiktok Shop outperformed other retailers this year thanks to the increased number of shoppers looking to save money around the holidays. TikTok shop’s Black Friday sales more than tripled compared with last year, while Temu and Shein rose 18 and 16 percent YoY.

?

On TikTok shop, makeup and personal care products were the big winners, with brands like Fenty Beauty and Estee Lauder topping the charts. The best part is that small and medium-sized brands were big winners here; one-third of sales were made by small and mid-sized brands.

The companies have certainly gained some ground from Amazon, with Amazon sales growth flat this year. This trend looks likely to continue, as a majority of shoppers have expressed a preference for looking for gift ideas on social media.?

?

TikTok expands throughout Europe

TikTok shop continued its global takeover in December, as the platform geared up to launch its platform in Spain and Ireland. After several delays concerning entry into European markets, this entry will be the first dive into Europe in three years.

Canada Post worker’s strike complicates holiday shipping

Over 50 thousand Canada Post workers went on strike this past month following a failed pay deal with the postal service.

The strike continued through December 17th, and greatly disturbed the flow of holiday deliveries.?

Shopify even urged the Federal government to take matters in-hand and do whatever could be done to get operations back on track ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Unfortunately, by the time that an agreement was achieved, it was far too late to make up for lost time, and many Canadians received their Christmas parcels late this yeat.

?

Speaking of strikes, the number of Amazon worker strikes seems to be picking up

Amazon has gotten a lot of flack over the years for low wages and unsafe working conditions, and it seems workers are beginning to fight back. Workers from 20 countries went on strike during Black Friday to demand better conditions and permission to form unions.

The strike only lasted until December 2nd, but the Black Friday strike has become a regular occurrence over the last five years.?

Over in the US, Amazon teamsters authorized strikes in New York. Unfortunately, Amazon refused to even recognize their union, much less negotiate a contract for better wages and working conditions, so there was little hope for success.?

?

The strike ended on Christmas Eve, with no ground gained by the teamsters, and (according to Amazon) no effect on service.
