57 years before, 1963 dawned as part of the coldest winter in 200 years.

A blizzard had occurred on 29 & 30 December 1962, causing snowdrifts up to 6 metres deep. Roads and railways were blocked, telephone lines brought down, & some villages were left cut off for several days.
