Happy Negroni Week

Such is the legacy and love for the Negroni cocktail that there's an entire week dedicated to it called "Negroni Week." and it is from today until the 24th of September. This special day was founded in 2013, Negroni Week is celebrated internationally with a focus on charity.

The Negroni's story, like many classic cocktails, is one of serendipity and evolution. From the stylish streets of Florence to bars worldwide, the drink has left an indelible mark on the world of cocktails. Whether you're a purist who sticks to the traditional recipe or someone who loves to experiment, one thing is clear: the Negroni's appeal is timeless. So, the next time you're sipping this ruby-red classic, take a moment to appreciate its rich history and the Italian count who gave it its name.

The birth of the Negroni is widely attributed to Florence, Italy, in the year 1919. The story goes that Count Camillo Negroni, a frequent traveler and adventurer, wanted to add a bit more kick to his favorite drink, the Americano. The Americano was a simple concoction of Campari, sweet vermouth, and soda water.

Count Negroni instructed the bartender at Caffè Casoni, Fosco Scarselli, to replace the soda water with gin. This switch transformed the Americano into a stronger, more robust drink. As the cocktail gained popularity among local people, it naturally came to be called the Negroni, in honour of its alleged inventor.

It's fair to say over the years, the Negroni has seen many variations. One of the most well-known is the Negroni Sbagliato, which means "mistaken Negroni." Legend has it that this version was Invented by chance at Bar Basso in the 1970s by Mirko Stochetto, the father of the current owner and proud Negroni evangelist Maurizio Stochetto, the Sbagliato is a twist on the traditional Negroni. It substitutes prosecco for gin—a delightful error at the time of its inception, with "sbagliato" aptly translating to "mistake." This variant is now a popular choice for visitors to this wonderful bar.

I prefer the classic version for me the beauty of the Negroni lies in its simplicity with equal parts of:

  • Gin
  • Sweet Vermouth
  • Campari

and of coursed Garnished with an orange peel, this cocktail is both refreshing and potent.

Today, many bartenders and mixologists experiment with the Negroni formula, introducing new ingredients and techniques to create modern twists on the classic, what is your favourite ? Are you a purist or do you like a twist on this awesome classic. Wishing you an awesome Negroni week , however you like it to be made. Discover a venue near you and celebrate :)

I had my first Negroni at the Bar Termini in London… and was hooked. Seduced by the flavors I was then intrigued by the simplicity of the proportions (1-1-1 even I could remember that!) and then fascinated by the endless variations I could create by trying out different gins in the mix (Gin Mare is one of my favorites), or tequilas (Espolón is my go-to). Next I will be experimenting with mezcal and pisco. And the occasional dash of Prosecco turns a Negroni from a sultry beast into a summery and deceptively light slightly longer cocktail. Nowhere near a good bar at the moment, I might just have to venture out to add a gin to my collection - maybe an alcohol-free one? Any suggestions?
