Happy Mother’s Day to All the Moms in Your Life
Happy Mother’s Day to All the Moms in Your Life
Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and that means the start of our busy season at Blueberry Haven. As I was writing this blog, a customer came in looking for some gifts to give her own mom this Sunday, and she shared some interesting information with me about the history of Mother’s Day. In honor of all the moms out there, I thought I would share her insight with all of you.
Ann Reeves Jarvis was known as a social activist and community organizer during the time of the American Civil War. She is also known as the woman who inspired Mother’s Day, and her daughter, Anna Jarvis, is recognized as the founder of the Mother’s day holiday as we know it in the United States. Several years after it became an official holiday, the younger Jarvis rejected the commercialization that was associated with Mother’s Day and spent a large part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. Obviously, she was unsuccessful in her quest, and we continue to celebrate our moms on the second Sunday in May each year by showering them with a variety of gifts.
If you are like my family, you have several moms who have impacted your life over the years. I would like to thank all the moms who are so special to me and my family.
First, of course, thank you to my mom! Some of you reading this may know her, so you know she has a fierce, competitive spirit, and she is an expert gamer—sometimes too good! If you ever need a tennis, bridge, or golf partner, or just some life advice, there aren’t many moms out there who are better than her!
My mother-in-law is another mom in my life who has some amazing qualities. Her unbelievable work ethic is an inspiration to those who know her. Although she is almost 80 years old (she will remind you that she is still 79), she still goes to work every day!
I can’t forget to thank my neighbor moms—Pat, Nancy and Sue. These special women have been in my life for the past 20 years, and they have been nothing but supportive of my entire family. These three beautiful friends have tolerated my boys wandering in their homes at all times of the day and a few broken windows over the years. Even better, they are always there for me with a book or a glass of wine.
Next, thank you to the Godmother moms who all have a special place in my boys’ hearts. In fact, my kids often battle about who has the best Godmother! These moms always support my boys in all they do, whether it’s in their sports, academics, or business ventures. All of these friends and family have been in our boys’ lives since they were first born, and they have watched our family grow and change over the years.
I also want to give a huge thank you to all the moms of my boys’ friends. Some of these moms have come and gone, and then come back again. I think about many of these friends often, even though I may not see them as much as I used to when our kids were younger. I am fortunate to have stayed in touch with a core group of these friends who have been in my life from the birth of my oldest to the start of my baby as he entered high school.
And, last but not least, thank you to all my hockey mom friends! Whether I met you on a mini mite, travel, AAA, high school, or all-state team, you are an important part of our family’s life. Cheers to all of you ladies who know how to deal with stinky, smelly hockey boys. My life wouldn’t be the same without you!
So, happy Mother’s Day to every mom out there, and a special shout out to all the moms in my life.
