Happy Martin Luther King Day!
Happy Martin Luther King Day!
Nothing sums up the world we live in better than these two stories about the new monument to his honor in Boston.
I'm no art critic so I can't comment.
I am a Claims Adjuster and I smell BS a mile away.
So it's understandably hard for me to buy into the 'Love Story' angle of "Embrace". It's a little rich given what we know of his numerous affairs.
I won’t ignore his flaws but I will remember why he is important to the American Ideal, why he should be honored with this day.
It was his words, and what they represent.
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

"Intelligence plus character - that is the true goal of education."
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"
"Everybody can be great... because anyone can serve."
I celebrate the perfect ideals of this imperfect man of Christ because he encapsulates for me the "One America Under God" I still believe in.
Doctor King's heros were my own. He understood the divine rights of Saint Augustine, and the judicial wisdom of Locke, Madison, Monroe and Jefferson.
I shared his enemies as well. Sickened as a child by the discrimination I witnessed in 1960s Charleston, SC., in my teens I used his words to challenge the open racial animus among my own family.
He proved that core truths defended with eloquent conviction could open minds and heal the hardest of hearts. He was to me the intellectual embodiment of true Liberty and Justice for All.
Racial healing is still a work in progress in our country only because he was taken before he could finish the job.
Rest in Peace, Martin and Coretta. I have missed you and have not forgotten what you taught. I will never purposely visit that sculpture. But I will read, repeat and do my best to live up to your true monuments many, many times.
