Welcome to International Women's Day! Let's look at a little US history of women's rights, and then flip the script.??(No, I'm no some feminazi, just a few facts from history people might not realize)
- 1777 – All states pass laws which take away women's right to vote?
- 1866 – 14th Amendment is passed which granted citizenship to those born/ naturalized in the US (namely formerly enslaved people) with "citizens" and "voters" defined as "male"?
- 1900 – However, by this year, every state had passed legislation granting married women the right to own property in their own name?
- 1920 - 19th amendment allowed women to vote (however Mississippi didn't ratify it till 1984)?
- 1963 - Equal Pay Act was passed requiring men and women to be paid equally when doing the same work?
- 1969 – California adopts the nation's first "no fault" divorce law, allowing divorce by mutual consent (i.e. women could initiate a divorce)?
- 1974 - Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) was passed so that women were able to get credit cards in their own name?
- 1975 – Supreme Court denies states the right to exclude women from juries?
- 2014 - Justice Sotomayor delivered the opinion of the Court “[A]ll too often,” as one Senator noted during the debate over §922(g)(9), “the only difference between a battered woman and a dead woman is the presence of a gun.”?
Now, let's reread this and swap the word "women" with "men" to see how the world might have worked.?
- 1777 – All states pass laws which take away MEN's right to vote?
- 1866 – 14th Amendment is passed which granted citizenship to those born/ naturalized in the US (namely formerly enslaved people) with "citizens" and "voters" defined as "FEMALE"?
- 1900 – However, by this year, every state had passed legislation granting married MEN the right to own property in their own name?
- 1920 - 19th amendment allowed MEN to vote (however Mississippi didn't ratify it till 1984)?
- 1963 - Equal Pay Act was passed requiring women and MEN to be paid equally when doing the same work?
- 1969 – California adopts the nation's first "no fault" divorce law, allowing divorce by mutual consent (i.e. MEN could initiate a divorce)?
- 1974 - Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) was passed so that MEN were able to get credit cards in their own name?
- 1975 – Supreme Court denies states the right to exclude MEN from juries?
- 2014 - Justice Sotomayor delivered the opinion of the Court “[A]ll too often,” as one Senator noted during the debate over §922(g)(9), “the only difference between a battered MAN and a dead MAN is the presence of a gun.”?
Just a something to ponder.?
