Happy International Nurses Day 2022: A Year of Success For Digital Nursing & Midwifery

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the 12th May, and recognises the contributions of the nurse.

The coronavirus pandemic brought the profession into the public spotlight - applications to study nursing courses in the UK increased by almost a third in the 2021 academic year, and a public opinion survey revealed nursing is considered one of the top three most important professions in the UK.

But there is still work to be done on the perception of what nurses do, from making decisions about diagnosis, to being involved in the research of new treatments, to being seen as leaders of professionals.

#HereforLife

Here for Life is a new campaign launched on International Nurses Day 2022 to encourage people to learn more about the nursing and midwifery professions, and showcase the skills, knowledge and professionalism of nurses and midwives.

Therefore, as pioneers leading change, I invite all nurses and midwives to share stories on LinkedIn and Twitter of something they do in their role as a nurse or midwife to bring about digital innovation that makes them #HereforLife.

To support our professions I invite everyone to recognise the growing community of passionate digital enthusiasts that have emerged from nursing and midwifery - this group turned out in force at Rewired, making our inaugural Digital Nursing Summit a major success. It was the busiest theatre on day one, and one of the top feedback requests the organisers received was “more nursing content”.

Picture of a megaphone with a caption say "?"More nursing content"? was in the top five requested topics for future Rewired events"? Picture of a gold medial with a caption saying "The Digital Nursing Summit was the most popular theatre on day one of Rewired"?

What next?

As CNIO my team and I are dedicated to ensuring nurses have a voice to lead digital transformation - this year we launched the Guidance for Nursing on What Good Looks Like (WGLL), and continue to build on this momentum with the launch of The Phillips Ives Review which will provide a strategic plan to prepare the nursing and midwifery workforce to deliver the digital future.

Thank you to all those nurses and midwives who work hard every day to lead and deliver digitally enabled care in a safe effective way.

Happy International Nurses Day!
