Happy International Human Resources Day

Happy International Human Resources Day

HR is shaping the future of work for all of us and today is the day to recognize it!

Since the pandemic started, HR had to work double the time – we continued to deliver our regular work and scheduled projects, while dealing with a global crisis deeply affecting the workforce. We supported our people navigating this hard period, while supporting the business staying afloat. We went above and beyond all expectations: invented flexible ways of working, got government support for the business (PPP, tax breaks, reduction in working hours), kept engagement and productivity levels high, supported with mental health and general wellbeing and so many others.

In the meantime, while we stepped up and became the first line of support to the business, our own people suffered: the absenteeism due to stress of the people professionals grew by 70% in 2020! HR has never been so busy, but it has never been so crucial to the business either.

Therefore, we should start by asking: are our teams the right size to support with everything HR is expected to deliver? Do we have the right skills? Are we prioritizing and focusing on the important deliverables? What are the strategic priorities for HR and how will we support to shape the future of work?

Answering these questions is key to understand if our teams are ready to be the HR department our organizations and our people need it to be.

In my opinion, besides assuring we have the right foundations and the basics of HR operations are working seamlessly, people professionals and leaders should be focusing on the following in the coming years:

  • Diversity, Equality and Inclusion
  • Wellbeing and mental health
  • Return to work, the new normal, navigating uncertainty
  • Developing leaders
  • Support agility and change
  • Build critical skills and competencies
  • Cost Optimization
  • Enable supportive and effective flexible work arrangements
  • Top talent acquisition and retention practices
  • Employee experience (leverage technology in partnership with IT)
  • People data, analytics and business critical insights

There is a lot to do and I am happy to have a highly skilled team that will support delivering these priorities. As HR leaders, it is more important than ever that we go the extra mile and support our teams with the right tools to deliver on behalf of our people and organizations.

Great post Andreia! HR has a critical role to play in an organisation’s success and hopefully the emphasis that has come to the forefront during the pandemic remains.
