Harnessing diversity and an inclusive mindset, and building high-performance, cohesive teams requires persistence, accountability and a balance of vision and steadfastness.
Although it is not a far-fetched idea to create happy teams, leaders who pay attention to each of their team members individually, understand their behavioural patterns, potentials and challenges, be active listeners, communicate with them clearly, help resolve conflicts right when they emerge and are appreciative of each individual’s efforts are able to build strong, compatible teams
Recently, I spoke to Wali Muhammad, who has spent more than a decade enabling Fortune 500 companies ignite their teams to peak performance across North America, the Middle East, South Asia and China. Wali elaborates on how an individual can help people develop their latent qualities or abilities that may lead to success.
The X-Factor of High Performing Teams
The willingness of individuals to work in a team, build a strong and trusting relationship with their colleagues and embrace a collaborative work environment boils down to one thing — psychological safety.
A team that is not risk-averse but open to experimentation and taking on new challenges without being fearful of criticism can be labelled as being in the ‘psychological safety’ zone. How do you create such a team? Wali, in this video, elaborates on this concept a little further.
Making a Difference in People’s Lives
When was the last time someone came up to you and said: “It is because you helped me, I have become successful” OR “You have helped me become the person I am today”?
The power of support and kindness knows no bounds. If you know you can make an impact in somebody’s life either by sharing your expertise, knowledge or helping them build on their competency, don’t shy away from that.
In my conversation with Wali, he shared a transformational account of a student he helped groom and get successful in his own right.
The journey from a Manager to a Leader
A leader’s job is to “build and construct” people. It is simply how a manager approaches their team that defines if they are capable of leading them or merely being someone at a higher level of authority.
Leaders constantly feel responsible to ignite a fire in their teams, build their enthusiasm, and keep their flame alive while being available for them in changing environments. Wali spells out some critical attributes and behaviours that a leader must have.
