Step 1: Understanding Happiness Chemicals

When you feel good, your brain releases happy chemicals known as happiness hormones or neurotransmitters. There are four main happiness brain chemicals:

Dopamine: Enables motivation, learning, and pleasure. You can boost dopamine levels by setting and achieving goals, indulging in hobbies, and celebrating small victories.

Oxytocin: Gives you a feeling of trust and motivates you to build intimate relationships. Engage in activities like hugging loved ones, spending quality time with friends and family, and practicing acts of kindness to release oxytocin.

Serotonin: Rewards you with a good feeling when you feel significant or important. Increase serotonin levels by getting exposure to sunlight, exercising regularly, and consuming foods rich in tryptophan like turkey, nuts, and seeds.

Endorphins: Release a brief euphoria that masks physical pain. Trigger endorphin release through activities like exercise, laughter, and enjoying spicy foods.

Each chemical plays a crucial role in your overall well-being, and ‘Own Your Life’ requires an understanding of how they work to empower you to boost your happiness levels.

Step 2: Simple Ways to Boost Your Happiness

Improving your happiness doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some simple ways to naturally increase your happiness chemicals:

Breathing Techniques: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and reduce stress. Close your eyes and sit in a comfortable position. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing the peace and calm in the air to fill your abdomen to expand; and exhale, slowly through your mouth, releasing stress and tension with each breath. Repeat a few times and feel the difference.

NLP Tool - Reframing: Use Reframing. Observe your thoughts for a while. Write down all the negative thoughts that cross your mind. Challenge every negative thought pattern associated with happiness by reframing them into more positive and empowering statements. For example, instead of saying "I'm not good enough," reframe it as "I am capable and deserving of success." Make this your daily routine and see the difference.

Embracing happiness not only makes you feel good but also contributes to:

Limiting Use: Set boundaries and avoid overindulging in activities that stimulate happiness chemicals.

Engaging in Moderation: Practice activities in moderation to maintain reasonable levels of happiness chemicals.

Building Resilience: Strengthen your ability to cope with stress and adversity through self-regulation techniques like mindfulness and self-awareness.
