By December, our outdoor winter preparations are usually wrapped up, and amidst the holiday rush, we find more opportunities to unwind. However, (IF YOU SO CHOOSE) even in this month, there's a checklist that can benefit your upcoming gardening season! Here is a short list of ideas:
Tool Maintenance
Now is the time to sharpen blades, repair tools, and organize your gardening equipment.?
Keep a Gardening Journal
Gardening journals are great because there leaves no room for guessing. Document weather patterns, soil combinations, successful and unsuccessful plant varieties, and more.?
Explore Seed Suppliers
There are so many seed companies and resources that can be confusing on which companies to purchase your seeds from! Here are the 3 main seeds that are available for the public to purchase:
Hybrid Seed:
A hybrid (F1), seed is created through traditional breeding methods that involve the cross-pollination of two parent varieties that were selected for specific traits. Seeds saved from hybrids most often will not be uniform and produce an exact copy from the parent plant.
Open Pollinated Seed:
?Open-Pollinated varieties are varieties of plants that reproduce themselves naturally, through either cross-pollination (between separate individual plants of the same species and variety via wind, insects, water) or by self-pollination (between male and female flower parts within the same flower or between separate flowers on the same plant).
Heirloom Seed:
Among older open-pollinated strains are the varieties we have come to regard as Heirlooms — carefully selected varieties whose seed lines have been maintained and passed down over generations.
Organic seeds are from plants grown without synthetic chemicals or genetic modification, following strict organic farming standards.
Learn and Expand
Dive into a gardening-focused book, e-book, or online course to deepen your knowledge.?
