As the year comes to an end, one often finds yourself thinking back on the year that was. Not only will this year be remembered as the first full post-lockdown year, but also as one of the most challenging to operate a business in. We had to make tough decisions about working from home, dealing with shortages of skills, and competing on an international stage for our local skills. Inflation and load-shedding have not only contributed to the complexity of keeping the doors open but also to when we can work or not. You would not be wrong to take a negative view and it is easy to imagine the worst as there seems to be an endless stream of bad news coming from our screens.

This, however, only paints one side of the picture, from our team’s interactions with you, and our clients, we have seen a relentless pursuit to find solutions for the problems we are facing daily. There has been a significant uptick in activity around new projects and initiatives to optimise and streamline business operations and how business is supported through technology. Automation and process optimisation has taken over the conversations as we move into a world where data is being valued to drive the reduction of costs and unlock value. Skills shortages have forced many of our clients to check their strategies, which I believe will lead to more focused and rewarding working environments. Competitiveness will now, more than ever, be linked to the productivity of our teams, gone are the days of Analysts spending most of their time developing reports and little in analysing the outcomes. Some circles have started talking about the birth of the Business Scientist, as an evolution of the Business Analyst, who will lead the drive for optimised processes and deliver value from quality data, and not despite it.
