Human hair recycled to clean waterways in Belgium
Maybe hair is not the first thing you think of when it comes to sustainable inventions or materials. But Patrick Janssen and his company may change that. Clippings are collected from hairdressers across the country. The hair is then fed into a machine that turns it into matted squares. These can be used to absorb oil and other hydrocarbons polluting the environment. They can also be made into bio-composite bags.?A single kilogram of hair can absorb seven to eight litres of oil and hydrocarbons.

Notpla is on a mission, to make packaging disappear. And they are, like us, taking the fight against plastic. They create their plastic alternative out of brown seaweed. Growing up to 1m per day, it doesn’t compete with food crops, doesn’t need fresh water or fertiliser, and actively contributes to de-acidifying our oceans.?
Notpla have been around for a while, but late last year they won The Earthshot Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious environmental prizes.?
We say congratulations on the award and also on the amazing products you are developing.
