On March 21, we celebrate the World Forestry Day, which was declared in November 1971, at the European Agriculture Confederation, with the support of FAO (United Nations Organization for Agriculture and Food), who agreed with the idea that this important environmental date be celebrated annually.
The International Day of Forests was established on the 21 of March, by resolution of the United nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012. Each year, various events celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations. Countries are encouraged to undertake efforts to organize local, national, and international activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns, on International Day of Forests. The Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests, in collaboration with the FAO, facilitates the implementation of such events in collaboration with governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, and international, regional and sub-regional organizations.
This day coincides with the beginning of autumn in the southern hemisphere and with the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere, which makes this date a simultaneous commemoration around the world since it converges two dates of the seasons.
The World Forestry Day is a day that is taken as the axis to remind worldwide the importance of caring for trees, as these are the main agents of maintaining a dynamic balance for life on earth, the ecosystem and the support of life of man. This day is also taken to spread the word about the economic contribution that the great timber producing countries make to the world economy.
It is important that we bear in mind that the preservation of forests is of the utmost importance, highlighting in the first place that they are fundamental contributors to water supply, especially for human settlements.
