Happy Father's Day!!!
Most of us parent the way that we were parented. We try our best to balance being firm and being permissive. It’s always a tough balance. Today’s concerns are a lot different than previous generations from school violence to the internet to hard core drugs. Today’s parents may appear at times to be overly protective/overly involved or completely absent/disconnected. It’s tough to find the right balance. We also live in society of entitlement. James Harrison (Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker) was quoted as saying, “I’m not about to raise my two boys into men by making them believe they are entitled to something just because they tried their best…”
Kids today have to be smart and resilient, and communicating with them doesn’t always have to be verbal. Sometimes, just catching ball or enjoying some quiet time together is also a great way to show them you care or get through a tough situation. Playing and learning go hand in hand. None of us is superhuman, and no one is perfect. So, we’re taught that work is for adults and play is for kids. Maybe don’t let go of that “inner child” quite yet especially if it gives you an opportunity to relate to your kids.
I think to myself often, “maybe it’s time to grow up and leave some of the childish things behind you like Superhero movies or my love of Star Wars or watching the Simpsons…” My kids are still at young enough ages to enjoy some time with their parents in public, but also, I have always made it a conscious effort to do stuff that will help me relate to them whether it’s playing video games or coaching sports or getting into their TV shows/movies.
