Studies routinely show that happy employees are more creative and productive. A 2016 experiment in Britain by the Social Market Foundation and the University of Warwick’s Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy, for example, found that employees who are happy were on average 12 percent more productive, and their productivity reached as high as 20 percent.

It’s really not a secret. If you feel valued by your company and enjoy being at work, you are more motivated to perform at a higher level. It’s simply human nature. While watching the bottom line and meeting company objectives is key to a company’s success, having fun on the job is just as vital. In fact, for some employees the workplace atmosphere is as important as their paycheck. Maybe more so.

Here are some simple ways to keep your team engaged and increase their enthusiasm for your company:

Time off – Nothing is appreciated more than an extra day off with pay.

Games – End staff meetings with some sort of game and award the winner a gift card to a local restaurant or coffee shop. It’s a fun way to liven up the gatherings and build teamwork. Brainstorm ways to add levity to your team’s day-to-day work.

Flex time – Employees today are seeking a work-life balance. Allow employees to work flexible hours when possible. It’ll help retain good employees.

Casual days – This can’t be overstated. Dressing casually can make employees more comfortable and relaxed. It’s a great little perk.

Employee recognition – Everyone wants to be noticed for work well-done. Make sure you’re recognizing the type of work and on-the-job behavior you want to see. Praise employees for a job well done and connect how it help’s further the company’s mission. Try to include a mix of one-on-one recognition, in meetings and in e-mails.

Equipment – Employees need the right tools to do their jobs more efficiently. When evaluating equipment needs, include the employees who will be using it in the discussions. They best know what’s needed to get the work finished.
