Happy Earth Day, everyone!

Today, we celebrate our beautiful planet and remind ourselves of the incredible responsibility we hold in protecting it. Earth is not just our home; it's the home of millions of species, diverse ecosystems, and remarkable landscapes. Each action we take, no matter how small, has a ripple effect on this intricate web of life.

We are celebrating Earth Day at a time when the world is in turmoil. Israel is at war with Palestinians. Russia and Ukraine are in a brutal war. There are many other hot spots around. Peace is critical to human and economic development and the achievement of sustainable development goals. Wars have a devastating impact on all the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Resources spent on war could be used for sustainable development, while the resources needed to rebuild cities, towns and communities destroyed by war could be used to accelerate sustainable efforts. Lives lost during wars can never be recovered while the physical and psychological damage on human life is permanent. This includes millions of people who are permanently violently displaced from their homes, communities, villages, cities and even countries and whose lives are negatively changed for generations to come.

This Earth Day, let’s renew our commitment to living sustainably. Whether it’s reducing waste, conserving water, planting trees, or supporting renewable energy, every step counts. Let’s engage in conversations that matter, educate each other, and embrace practices that promote environmental health.

On this day, we call on the United Nations to expand the list of goals to include goals to accelerate and intensify sustainable development efforts in general and sustainable development goals in particular. We propose the following accelerator goals:

Goal 18: Effective Inspired Leadership for the Goals

Goal 19: Strategy and Strategic Thinking for the Goals

Goal 20: Research and Development for Successful Goals Implementation

Goal 21: Education and Awareness of the Goals

Goal 22: Training and Capacity Building for the Goals

Goal 23: Sustainable Politics for the Goals

Goal 24: Sustainable Governance for the Goals

Goal 25: Sustainable and Just Resourcing and Funding or the Goals

Goal 26: Nationalisation of the Goals

Goal 27: Making the Goals Mandatory

Goal 28: Business and Entrepreneurship for the Goals

Together, we can tackle climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure that future generations inherit a planet as vibrant and life-supporting as the one we enjoy today.
