Happy Earth Day 2022!
What is Earth Day?
Held annually on April 22nd, Earth Day is a day for the global community to come together to protect our planet and raise awareness?of the environmental crisis we all face. Earth Day was founded over five decades ago in 1970 and 52 years later, this important movement is still going strong in it's mission to encourage everyone to reflect on their actions and aim to make a happier, healthier and greener planet for future generations to come.?
Earth Day and The Corporate World
“Sustainability is not only discussed by politicians and activists, in the last year it has become a truly important agenda topic for the international capital market and hence the corporate world”.
As rightly said by Olov Schagerlund, President and CEO of our parent company Nordomatic, sustainability has become a key topic in the corporate world with many businesses now implementing a corporate sustainability strategy.
With 40% of carbon emissions coming from the built environment, being more environmentally conscious and sustainable at home or in the office should be a priority for everyone. At Spica, A Nordomatic Company, we too are committed to using natural resources responsibly, investing for the long-term wellbeing of the planet and ensuring that our employees and clients are treated fairly.?
How We Help Our Clients To Be More Sustainable?
1. Create a more efficient workplace
With flexible and remote working, some days are busy in the office whilst other days, desks and meetings rooms are sitting empty. This leads to a waste of time, space and electricity. We have helped our clients combat this problem through our workplace experience app Luna.
Our clients use Luna to book desks, meeting rooms, people and equipment. Luna offers at-a-glance availability of resources, so you can spend less time looking for which workspaces are available and instead book spaces immediately. Employees can save valuable time by ordering catering or making service requests through the app.
By implementing Luna, our clients are able to maximise their office space efficiently which is a key sustainable practice as office space accounts for the second highest operational cost for businesses after salaries. With Luna, businesses can minimise the environmental impact as you have the data to check what days will the office be empty thus, cut back on electricity, ventilation and heating.
Our workplace experience platform GemEx Engine? utilises a complete range of sensor data including PIR, CO2, Noise, Temperature, VOC’s, Light etc. Using our platform, landlords, building managers and facilities managers have access to important data and analytics on occupancy and indoor air quality (IAQ) conditions. Either from our GemEx platform or Luna app, employees can monitor and adjust IAQ such as temperature and humidity levels. This helps facilities managers in being able to control the usage and ensure an empty office room is not being heated.
The GemEx platform provides our clients with real-time data and long-term trend analytics on usage, occupancy and portfolio. Based on real-time and historical data, our clients use occupancy and portfolio analytics to gain greater insights to help reshape and resize their real estate to match demand.
Combining IoT sensors, data, analytics, a workplace experience platform and app means our clients are one step closer to running a totally free of waste and net zero carbon workplace.
2. Go one step further with artificial intelligence
We are making it easier for our clients to eliminate energy waste, save the planet, and save money thanks to Ecopilot? which is artificial intelligence for real-time HVAC efficiency. Ecopilot harnesses the thermal mass of a building in order to keep the indoor temperature within a comfortable range while significantly reducing energy consumption.
Ecopilot provides 5-day weather forecasts thus, our clients are able to see how current conditions like sun, wind and outdoor temperature affect their building’s performance and automatically applies this data to optimise HVAC efficiency. Ecopilot has helped our smart clients with up to 40% in HVAC savings.
With Ecopilot’s smart technology, our clients are improving productivity, reducing costs, maintaining tenant comfort with a stable indoor climate, all whilst helping our clients fulfil environmental requirements.

The COP26 Glasgow Climate Pact stated all greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 50% by 2050 and be net zero by 2030. Climate change creates challenges for building and facilities managers in ensuring optimal temperature ranges for occupants. There’s a direct relationship between a building’s day-to-day operations, energy needs and the weather conditions. Our smart customers are able to use Ecopilot to anticipate the energy needs of a building based upon the data it gathers from weather forecasts and use the real-time information to have the building reacts with changes to heating, cooling, ventilation, water use, and lighting.
Property managers can prevent hot radiators being left on throughout the summer or lights being left on when there’s enough natural light, allowing a building to decide when and where these resources are needed, promoting the indoor environment, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency. Therefore, meeting environmental standards and be on the path the achieving global targets.
How we are being sustainable internally at Spica?
1. Avoid single use plastic
At Spica, we are cutting out single use plastics like plastic cups and instead are encouraging our employees to use reusable?water bottles and thermal cups when using the water cooler or getting coffee from the canteen.
2. Encourage the use of public transport and work to minimise the impact of fuel usage
We encourage our employees to reduce vehicle emissions by car sharing to reduce millage as much as possible. We promote the various public transport options that can be used as an alternative to get to work on our Luna app such as the tram or bus. We also offer a cycle scheme to our employees to help them get cycling to work.
3. Training staff in basic housekeeping procedures
We train our staff to make sure all lights are switched off at the end of the day and no devices are left plugged in as these little stuff can add up to consuming a lot of power over the course of weeks and months. Having posters near the doors and lights helps our staff to remember to check all equipment has been turned off, helping reduce Spica's energy consumption.
4. Going paperless
Spica are a paperless company as we recommend to our employees to use online tools as much as possible, avoiding unnecessary printing. Instead of using flyers and posters, we use USB sticks with portable online information about Spica to promote at events and conferences. All paper, cardboard, and plastic waste generated in our office is recycled using the correct designated recycling bins.
Earth Day 2022
This Earth Day, we hope you too reflect about our earth and do your bit, small or big, from switching the lights off to implementing cloud-based software to help reduce costs and consumption. Whatever it is, play your part in investing in our planet and saving the Earth for future generations to come.
Happy Earth Day from everyone at Spica!
