February is Career Technical Education (CTE) Month! CTE is a broad term for education that combines academic and technical skills with the knowledge and training needed to succeed in today's labor market. CTE prepares students for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies in a real-world, applied context. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 94% of high school students in CTE programs graduate, versus 87% of non-CTE student graduation rates. At Next Gen Trucking, our focus is working within CTE to create more high school programs in Supply Chain Management, Commercial Driving, Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, and Warehousing and Logistics.??
Engaging in local school Career Technical Education (CTE) programs is a strategic move for companies that yield benefits for both the business community and the education sector. Collaborating with schools in CTE initiatives fosters a direct link between industry needs and educational curricula, ensuring students are equipped with relevant skills and knowledge. This symbiotic relationship not only addresses the workforce demands of businesses but also cultivates a pipeline of skilled and job-ready talent.
Teaching students a skill can prepare them for success, rendering them career-ready upon graduation. Parke Heritage High School is in its second year of having a commercial driver training program and is expanding the program to enroll students from other local schools. Adam Kerrington earned his CDL through the training program and said, "A career in trucking can last a lifetime." ?After graduation, he was flooded with offers and went to work for Collom Excavating. ?As we celebrate CTE Month, consider getting involved in your local school. If they do not have a program in Supply Chain Management, Commercial Driving, Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, or Warehousing and Logistics, let Next Gen Trucking connect with them and explore adding a program to their CTE pathways.? Let's work together to create quality education programs that benefit the trucking industry while creating career pathways to success for young people.??
