拜年了! 大家新年好!恭喜发财!身体健康!万事如意!心想事成!
(Happy New year, everyone! May you come into a good fortune! good health! Everything goes well! May all your wishes come true!)
Every year during the Chinese New Year period, many people will be asking me about the animal of the year. Starting from February 5th 2019 and ending on January 24th 2020, this year 2019 (己亥) will be an Earth Pig year. 2020 will be a year of the Rat. 2018 was a year of the Dog.
The Chinese zodiac, or shenxiaos (生肖/sheng-sshyao/ ‘born resembling'), is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes.
There are 12 Chinese zodiac signs, in the following order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each sign is named after an animal, and each animal has its own unique characteristics. 2019 is a year of the Pig.
12 Zodiac Signs - What's Your Zodiac Animal?
Chinese zodiac animals have timely meanings as opportunity of fortune/luck vs potential risks. People associate each animal with certain characteristics. It's believed that people born in a given year have the personality of that year's animal.
Each zodiac animal's year comes around every 12 years, and each year is associated with a zodiac animal. The most recent zodiac sign years are shown below.
Each Chinese zodiac animal has personality traits assigned to it by the ancient Chinese. Chinese people believe these traits will be embodied in people, according to their zodiac sign.
Chinese Zodiac Origins — Why 12 Animals
The 12 animals were chosen deliberately, after many revisions. The zodiac animals are either closely related to ancient Chinese people's daily lives, or have lucky meanings.
Chinese zodiac uses the principles of yin and yang. Since the zodiac animal cycle of 12 is divisible by two, every zodiac sign can occur only as either Yin or Yang. Want to know more, go to Chinese Zodiac story.
Ben Ming Nian (Zodiac Year of Birth)
As the Chinese zodiac recurs every 12 years, your animal year will come around when you are 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, etc. According to ancient Chinese superstition, in your birth sign year, you will offend the God of Age, and will have bad luck during that year.
