Happy Bitcoin Whitepaper Day
“Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” would have sounded like a boring title to your everyday research paper.?
However, it kickstarted a financial revolution that few could have predicted. Nine pages and 2736 words long, this paper essentially introduced a novel digital currency. It explained how transactions would work, how verification would be achieved, how Bitcoin would protect itself against attacks, and more.
As we know, the whitepaper was written under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, a mystery which remains unsolved. The first place the whitepaper existed was on the ‘bitcoin.org ’ site, which Nakamoto registered on 18 August 2008.
Satoshi uploaded the whitepaper on this site on 31 October 2008. On the same day, he sent an email to the Cypherpunk mailing list with a link to the paper and the subject line ‘Bitcoin P2P e-cash Paper .’
From this time until December 2010, Nakamoto was mainly seen on the Bitcointalk forum, where he made his final post before disappearing. While we scratch our heads over their identity, Satoshi’s legacy is still celebrated, and it all began with that whitepaper.
More Than Just A Paper
As we think of Bitcoin Whitepaper Day, we also honour the spirit of financial freedom and empowerment it symbolizes. In some way, this paper is one reason DoshFX exists, as we aim to transition the whole of South Africa into the digital age of cryptocurrencies.
