Happy birthday, PPL!
A double-header with PPL took place at Kings Place on the Monday, with the dual celebration of their AGM and 90-year anniversary.
I use the word ‘celebration’ for the AGM advisedly, because PPL’s upward trend has continued ever since Fran Nevrkla took on the chairmanship in 2001. Now it has hit new heights, with a net distributable revenue of £247.2 million collected from UK and international airplay in 2023. This is an all-time high and speaks volumes for the team Peter Leathem OBE and John Smith OBE have behind them, and the excellent work they all consistently do.
Yet it is just the tip of the iceberg, as PPL is now investing in developing music industry talent through exciting initiatives such as PPL Giving.
I witnessed the company’s development first hand when I worked at PPL between 2001 and 2020, and it is so heartening to watch its continued development. From the role I now have at Naxos I can see how valuable the collection and distribution of this money is to us, the labels we represent and the performers – the front-of-house conductors, instrumentalists and singers, and the unsung orchestral players and choral singers, who are if anything even more important in the chain. For all of us, the royalties are more valuable and essential than ever before.

So on their 90th anniversary, congratulations to the whole team at PPL – thinking of those in Member Services, Repertoire and Distribution who I speak to from day to day.
I can’t miss the opportunity to mention a new recording of the music that was played in the café in Bristol that became part of the court case in forming PPL in 1934. The overture to Daniel Auber’s opera Le domino noir has been given a fresh coat of paint by Neeme J?rvi and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and is due out at the end of this month on Chandos Records :
In the meantime, happy birthday PPL!
