Happy birthday chatGPT

It has been one incredible year in AI since the release of chatGPT. Needless to say it has had a profound impact in almost all economic sectors and captured the imagination of the public. It has made AI cool and expectancy is sky-high.

I want to mention the previous big impact technology - iPhone. It took 3 years for actual startups to come up with disruptive solutions - Uber (and other taxi services), delivery services for food, grocery etc. to name a few.

Now we expect shrinking of timelines for innovation. I suspect we will see disruptive innovations from 2024 onwards based on LLMs.

AI has been trying to mimic humans so that it can "replace" human activity. Stanford economist Erik Brynjolfsson warns of this specific issue. In his paper "The Turing Trap: The Promise & Peril of Human-Like Artificial Intelligence" warns of AI replacing human jobs.

I think the revolution of chatGPT is the simplicity of access. No need to learn any new coding or any specific technique to use it. Google was impactful because it was simple and kept it simple. Needless to say, the capability has improved to such great heights, it was not thought possible few years ago. Now everyone is talking about AGI as a near term goal and many even claim that AGI has been reached.

The biggest impact will be when autonomous agents leveraging other software/AI to get things done. We have seen agent swarms and other emerging techniques for which we are yet to gauge the impact.
