Finding your equilibrium is the main ingredient that I recommend for a happy university student life. Most of the time, our students are pressurized, frustrated, irritated and in a worried state about their future. If you take a look at the causes of student stress, then there are number of factors ranging from loneliness, homesickness, relationship issues, financial difficulties, lack of knowledge to balance work and study, struggle in academic activities, feeling unsure about the life after graduation, mental health issues, eating disorders, harmful usage/withdrawal from drugs/alcohol etc.
Stress is normal in day-to-day life. Even successful coping mechanisms are different from each individual. Try some of the following strategies if you feel that you are in stress.
1.??????Change your mindset - Adapt a positive, happy and strong mentality as a student and try to build a unique personality among the ordinary people. The comparison of yourself and your productivity in life with others can be a disaster in your personal development.
2.??????Poly focal attention in life – I used to love this technique as I really enjoyed doing different things in life. Apart from doing degree with one focus, it is better to have good deviations to break the monotony in life. I enjoyed my academic life by doing various extra educational courses, engagement in recreational activities with my friends /family, income generation methods, knowledge spreading community activities as a volunteer in professional bodies/societies etc.
3.??????Exercise- This does not have to be a gym session. You need a physical activity to pump up your heat rate like a brisk walk. Normally, exercises releases endorphins which makes us feel good as we get a sense of achievement. Try to find an array of physical activities from dancing, martial arts to yoga or any other sports activity.
4.??????Talk – Talking to someone who is a near and dear person to him/her is often working well with many students. That person can be a family member, friend or anyone who really cares your well being as a person. Even many universities have free counselling services and support groups. You will get to know that you are not alone by sharing your difficulties and even you will be able to get a different perspective on how you see things in life.
5.??????Engage in religious activities – Depending upon your religion, you can go to the temple, kovil, mosque or church to engage in religious activities or else you can do it in the place where you stay. You simply need to take time out to concentrate your mind on something very relaxing and positive. Meditation is helpful to practice mindfulness and apart from that I am practicing equanimity in life by facing success, failure, fame, disrepute, praise, blame, pleasure and pain.??

6.??????Sleep – Having a bed time routine is advised to have a quality sleep. Because the body then knows when to go to sleep and relax. Number of hours of sleep may differ from person to person but 6-8 hours of sleep is essential for your well-being.
7.??????Time management -You definitely need to master on time because most of the time, you feel that you are running out of time which in turn can induce unnecessary stress in you. Try to have a written schedule on daily, monthly and yearly basis and break your tasks in to manageable chunks with proper planning and prioritizing. Allocation of time slots for yourself to relax/entertain/socialize/stretch is necessary in this schedule.
If you have tried few or all of those stress busting methods but still cannot get over from the vicious cycle of stress, then it is a good idea to seek medical help to check whether the symptoms you experience are really related to stress or any other underlying issue.
