Welcome back to the Happiness Reset at Work Campaign where I explore the key drivers that enhance career satisfaction and happiness at work.
This week's newsletter focuses on the third driver: Purpose.
Understanding Purpose at Work
In simple terms, purpose is the reason behind what we do. It goes beyond our daily tasks and responsibilities, tapping into the core of why we show up at work every day.
Having a purpose can mean:
- Working towards a goal that aligns with our values
- Contributing to something ambitious
- Finding joy in the work we do
For a long time, I personally struggled with the concept of purpose because it seemed quite grand and vague. What helped me make it more practical was thinking about purpose at work in relation to my values.
For example, one of my values is learning. As long as I am learning and enabling others to learn at work, I see my work as full of purpose.
Aligning your daily tasks with your values can help instill that sense of purpose you are seeking.

Reflect on Purpose with These Questions:
- What is the purpose of your role in one sentence?
- Why is what you do important?
- What drives you at work?
Creating a Vision Board to Capture Your Purpose
If you want to reflect on your values and what's important to you, Christine Brown-Quinn a Career Strategist with a background in international finance, advises creating a vision board.
This involves putting together images that resonate with you personally and professionally.
Very quickly, on your vision board, you will notice aspects that shine through strongly, but you will also spot themes that have been under-invested for certain reasons.
Understanding this can help you form a career based on the purpose that is important to you.
