HAPPINESS

"Happy those who do not follow the counsel of the wicked, nor go the way of sinners, nor sit in company with scoffers. Rather, the law of the Lord is their joy; God's law they study day and night. They are like a tree planted near streams of water, that yields its fruit in season; its leaves never wither; whatever they do prospers." (Psalm 1:1-3).
Do you want to be happy? Do you long for happy days? Do you desire eternal life with God?
I am reminded of an old song that goes like this: "Looking for love in all the wrong places."?

Do not look for happiness in all the wrong places.
In the Prologue of his Holy Rule, Saint Benedict teaches: "Seeking his workman in a multitude of people, the Lord calls out to him and lifts his voice again: Is there anyone here who yearns for life and desires to see good days? If you hear this and your answer is "I do," God then directs these words to you: If you desire true and eternal life, keep your tongue free from vicious talk and your lips from all deceit; turn away from evil and do good, let peace be your quest and aim (Ps 33:14-15). Once you have done this, my eyes will be upon you and my ears will listen for your prayers; and even before you ask me, I will say to you: Here I am (Isa 58:9).
The Scriptures do not say happy those who live in a mansion and drive a Tesla. The Scriptures do not say happy those who lie and deceive others. The Scriptures do not say happy those who sin and lead others to sin. The Scriptures do not say happy those who dine on sumptuous dinners in fancy restaurant while families struggle to feed their children. The Scriptures do not say happy those who accumulate wealth and hoard material possessions. The Scriptures do not say happy those who spend money needlessly on expensive hobbies and the latest iPhone model.
Instead, the Scriptures tell us that those who meditate on God's law - his law of Love - night and day are happy. The Scriptures tell us that those who love God are happy. The Scriptures tell us that those who do his holy will are happy and find lasting peace. The Scriptures tell us that those who pray and praise God are happy. God is the source of our happiness and fulfills the deepest desires of our heart. God dwells in the heart of those who love him and love others.?
There is no secret recipe for happiness. God himself is our happiness and our joy. God comes first, before our spouse, family and friends. Seek God with a sincere and contrite heart, and you will find happiness in this life and in the next.
