Happiness & The Future Of Work

Happiness & The Future Of Work

I’m on a mission to make the world a better place with happy people in fulfilling, rewarding careers. Lately, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the “happy people” part of that equation.

As the future of work unfolds before us, many are feeling uncertain. There’s stress in the air - AI is supposedly coming for all our jobs, money is tight, and everyone is feeling the squeeze. But I believe that with the right perspective and tools, we can carve out a future where work makes us happy, rather than worn down.

In this article, I want to explore how we can turn the future of work into an opportunity for happiness. Yes, there are challenges, but I believe that with remote working and living in smaller, closer-knit communities, as well as the power of AI and technology to free us up for more creative, meaningful work, there’s a lot to look forward to.

The Stress of Now: AI and Financial Pressure

I'm not going to sugarcoat it - there’s a lot of anxiety about what lies ahead. AI is rapidly transforming industries, and people fear that their jobs might be next in line for automation. Add to that the fact that many are already feeling the pinch financially, and it’s no wonder we’re all a bit stressed.

But here’s the thing: AI isn’t here to steal our jobs - it’s here to change them. I know that might sound like spin, but bear with me for a minute. The truth is, AI will handle the repetitive, mundane tasks, giving us more time and brainpower to focus on what really matters - being creative, solving problems, and collaborating in ways we never thought possible. AI is a tool that can enhance our capabilities, not replace them. Think of it as your digital sidekick, taking care of the boring bits while you get to focus on the fun stuff.

I know AI can also do the creative stuff - it produced the graphic at the top of this article, but it didn't do it by itself. I worked with the tool to create the image that I was happy with, then took it into Photoshop to use AI to cut out the background quicker than I would do it by hand in the past and put the title in. All told, instead of me drawing something that wouldn't be as dynamic would have taken hours not minutes. But that's for this quick article, for professional stuff I'd still be dealing with a creative, marketing focused person who would also be using AI in more adaptive and creative ways than I know how to...

Financial pressure is a tougher nut to crack, but the future of work doesn’t have to mean working harder for less. In fact, by rethinking where and how we work, we might just find that we can live better, even in challenging times.

A New Way of Living: Smaller Communities and Better Quality of Life

Imagine this: instead of spending hours commuting to a cramped office in a sprawling city, you’re working from a cozy home office in a smaller, more personal community. You can pop out for a walk in the countryside during lunch, or enjoy your local café where they know your name. Sounds idyllic, right? Well, I think for millions around the world, that could be the future of work.

Remote work has opened the door to a new way of living—one where you’re not tethered to a specific geographic location. With the right technology and flexibility, you could live anywhere. And as more people embrace remote work, we’ll see a shift away from overcrowded, impersonal cities toward smaller communities where the pace of life is slower, and the quality of life is higher.

In these smaller towns or even rural areas, the cost of living is often lower, allowing people to stretch their incomes further. Plus, these communities offer a chance to build deeper connections with your neighbours—something that can be hard to come by in the hustle and bustle of city life.

And let’s not forget the personal time you’ll reclaim by cutting out that dreaded commute. With more time for yourself, your family, and your passions, work-life balance becomes more than just a buzzword—it becomes a reality. You can spend your time doing what makes you happy, whether that’s working on a side project, learning a new skill, or simply enjoying more time with loved ones.

AI: The Creative and Collaborative Sidekick

One of the biggest benefits of AI in the workplace is its potential to supercharge our creativity and collaboration. Rather than bogging us down with menial tasks, AI can handle data analysis, scheduling, and other routine activities, freeing up our minds to think bigger and bolder.

Take creative industries, for example. AI can sift through mountains of data, highlight trends, and offer suggestions, but it can’t replace the human touch when it comes to innovation. It can generate ideas, but we’re still the ones who get to shape, refine, and execute those ideas. AI enhances our creative process by giving us more time and resources to do what we do best: think, imagine, and create.

And it’s not just about creativity—AI can improve collaboration, too. AI tools that help organise team projects, analyse communication patterns, and even suggest ways to improve team dynamics. With AI working behind the scenes, teams can focus on what matters most—building something great together.

Collaboration, when done right, can be one of the most fulfilling parts of work. And with AI taking care of the logistics, we can spend more time building meaningful relationships with our colleagues and bringing out the best in each other.

Happiness in the Future of Work

So, what does happiness in the future of work look like? It’s a world where AI handles the tedious tasks so we can focus on the work that fulfills us and connects us. It’s a world where we have more personal time, thanks to remote work, and where we can live in smaller, more connected communities that support a better quality of life. It’s about the age old adage of working smarter, not harder, and finding joy in collaboration and creativity.

The future of work might look different, but different doesn’t have to mean worse. In fact, it could mean better—more freedom, more flexibility, and more happiness. By embracing the changes coming our way, we can shape the future of work into something that doesn’t just support our careers but also supports our well-being.

The future of work is not something we have to fear. With the right mindset, we can turn these challenges into opportunities for a more fulfilling and happy life.

Remote work will give us the freedom to live where we want and reclaim our personal time. And smaller, more connected communities will allow us to build a life that’s rich in relationships and meaning.

I’m curious—what are you most excited about in the future of work? How do you think AI and remote work will change your life for the better? Let me know your thoughts.

Stephen Shortt, what is your opinion on the idea that the acceleration of AI will lead to the “inevitable” adoption of the 4 day work week ? Might some barriers not also be: - Higher expectations and productivity goals, - Lack of buy-in from executives due to losing a competitive advantage, - Lack of policy support for this change, - A normalised culture of availability Historically, technology advancement has also lead to new industries being opened, but rarely less work. What makes this techno-shift different ?
