There are 85,000 victims of rape and sexual assault every year. Rape crisis reported that 1 in 4 women have been be sexually assaulted as an adult.

Think about 4 women you know, how would you feel if this happened to them? #itsnotok.

My fellow men, don’t think we are excluded, 12,000 men are victims of rape every year. Although this may be higher as many go unreported. #itsnotok.

When such an awful and traumatic event occurs, it is important that we treat victims compassionately, fairly and respectfully, and that they feel believed.?

Just 14% strongly agreed/agreed that they could obtain justice by reporting to the police. #itsnotok.

This should not be surprising when only 1.4% of reported cases are charged and in 2019/20, 41% of victims withdrew their support for prosecution.

That means:

• 41% of victims felt let down and gave up on justice.
• 41% of offenders got away with it.?
• #itsnotok.

The best way to get more people to come forward is to demonstrate that those who persevere get justice. We can do this by treating victim better.

Recent survey results showed those who agreed or strongly agreed:

82% - There were long periods when I heard nothing at all

70% -? I (or my representative) had to chase for information

25% -? I was given all the information I needed about the police investigation

26% - ?I felt fully informed about how the case was progressing

So the majority of victims felt that they just weren’t being kept up to date. #itsnotok.

It seems like simple changes, such as regular updates on case progress, would help victims.

We are currently running a project to understand how technology can improve the experience for victims, to stop them withdrawing and ultimately get justice.?
