Rwanda Celebrates Historic Achievement at Pan African Mathematics Olympiad
Yesterday, President Paul Kagame welcomed a team of Rwandan students at Urugwiro Village, celebrating their remarkable achievements in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This year marks a significant milestone for Rwanda, as the nation secured its first-ever gold medal at PAMO 2024, which concluded earlier this week in South Africa.
Denys Prince Tuyisenge, a standout among the six students representing Rwanda, was awarded the prestigious gold medal, highlighting his exceptional mathematical prowess. This achievement not only underscores Tuyisenge’s individual talent but also reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire Rwandan team, which was trained by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Rwanda.
In addition to the gold medal, the Rwandan team also earned a silver medal, three bronze medals, and several PAMO Girls Bronze Medals. This impressive haul represents Rwanda's best performance in the competition to date, showcasing the country's growing strength in mathematics on the continental stage.
The Pan African Mathematics Olympiad is an annual event designed to bring together secondary school students from across Africa to compete in mathematics. This year's edition attracted participants from 27 African countries, fostering a spirit of collaboration and intellectual challenge among young mathematicians. Rwanda's participation in PAMO has grown over the years, with this being their fourth appearance in the competition.
As Rwanda continues to invest in education and the development of its youth, the achievements of these students serve as an inspiration for future generations. President Kagame's recognition of their hard work and dedication reflects the nation's pride in their accomplishments and the importance of nurturing talent in all fields, particularly in mathematics.
