Hands-on business experience while I study is a win-win for me.
Hello there! I’m Raees, and I’m a 19-year-old student undertaking my Digital Marketing Degree Apprenticeship with E.ON UK. I’m currently in my fourth rotational placement at E.ON Next, where I’m covering all sorts of projects from festival sponsorships to email campaigns.
When I began this apprenticeship, I’d just left sixth form after taking my A-Levels. I remember feeling at a crossroads, wondering which direction to take as I ventured into the professional world. Once I’d set my heart on digital marketing, I had the choice of a traditional degree or the apprenticeship route. I soon decided on the latter, once all the perks that went with it became apparent.
I’m now going into my third year at Nottingham Trent University, where I’m developing an ever-growing marketing knowledge that I can bring to the workplace. From the hustle and bustle of campaigns to the trendy landscape of social media, and the wonderful world of partnerships, I’ve been able to explore many different parts of the organisation. And I’ve done it all whilst applying the knowledge of digital marketing I’ve gained in my studies.?
While earning and learning simultaneously is a major perk of an apprenticeship, for me, the best thing about it is the practical work experience. Compared to the traditional university route, I can gain over three years’ experience in a professional environment, even before I’ve completed my degree. Not only will that give me a head start in my career once I finish my course – it also means I can make faster progress within my placement company, E.ON Next.
What interests me most about my apprenticeship is the fact that the work I do genuinely contributes to the company’s mission. I’m not just completing small tasks or work shadowing. I’m working on full scale campaigns and projects, giving real world application to my knowledge of digital marketing.
I recently had a fantastic opportunity to lead a campaign that involved creating a captivating brand activation space at the Godiva Festival in Coventry. This meant coordinating the ]campaign strategy with external parties as well as stakeholders from across the business. It was a real thrill to see our brand space come to fruition – and I’m confident its many interactive elements left a lasting impression on festival goers!?
Reflecting on my apprenticeship so far, I’ve noticed a significant personal transformation. I’m no longer the reserved individual who was too scared to bring his ideas to the table. Whether it’s down to the company’s diversity and inclusion network, or actively participating in agency meetings, being able to lead the room has boosted my confidence in public speaking.?
Additionally, as I continue to move around within the business, I've had the chance to work with numerous teams across different departments. Inevitably, that means adapting to new teams and work environments every six months, developing strong collaborative skills and gaining diverse perspectives on how each team operates. All experiences that have given me valuable insights, and continue to contribute to my professional growth.?
