SAG-AFTRA’s Replica Protection Bill Passes California Senate
A bill to protect performers from unauthorized AI replicas was approved by the California Senate and will soon head to the governor’s desk.
SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, has prioritized this bill, which requires explicit consent for the use of a “digital replica” of a performer. The bill extends protections to various types of performances, including videogames, audiobooks, and commercials, and covers non-union work.
Initially opposed by the Motion Picture Association, the bill was amended to address concerns and now has a neutral stance from the MPA. The Assembly approved the bill in May, and it passed the Senate 36-1.
Trump Shares AI-Generated Images Falsely Linking Taylor Swift to His Campaign
Donald Trump recently shared AI-generated images falsely showing Taylor Swift and her fans endorsing his presidential campaign. These images were created by the John Milton Freedom Foundation, a Texas-based non-profit with a history of spreading misinformation.
Despite Trump's distancing from the images, they highlight the growing use of AI in generating misleading content, raising concerns about its impact on elections.
How AI Could Shape Campaigns and Voter Perception in 2024
In 2024, 64 countries are set to hold national elections, making it a pivotal year, especially with concerns about AI and deepfakes potentially spreading disinformation.
AI will play a significant role in campaign management and voter engagement, increasing both opportunities and risks. Deepfakes pose a threat by creating realistic false narratives that can damage candidates' reputations and mislead voters.
Regulatory bodies and technological strategies are being implemented to combat these threats, but public awareness and critical thinking remain essential. Trust, verification, and vigilance are crucial for maintaining the integrity of global elections.

HAND and the Future of Digital Talent at IBC 2024
HAND is proud to be leading ‘Digital Replicas and Talent ID: Provenance, Verification and New Automated Workflows.’ at the annual IBC – International Broadcasting Convention – held at the RAI Center in Amsterdam, NL – 13-16 September, 2024.
The project is supported by Champions Paramount Global, ETC (The Entertainment Technology Center at USC), SMPTE (The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), ITV, and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, alongside participants EIDR (The Entertainment Identifier Registry) and Videntifier.
The Scan Truck, WaveSeven Consulting, WILD CAPTURE, and EZDRM are also contributing to the project.
The project aims to tackle issues related to AI-generated content, virtual world representation, and talent provenance.
