Tupac's AI Resurrection Sparks Legal Debate in Congress
In late April, Senator Tillis stirred controversy in Congress when he played a song featuring an AI-generated verse by Tupac from the rapper Drake, raising discussions about the ethical and legal challenges surrounding the use of AI to resurrect deceased individuals.
The debate highlights an obscure legal landscape regarding the control of digital likenesses and voices of deceased celebrities, especially with advancements in AI. Calls for federal legislation to navigate these complexities have been amplified.
Meanwhile, the enduring legacy of Tupac Shakur has been compromised by controversies surrounding the posthumous release of his music and the commercialization of his image, exemplified by partnerships like the Nixon watch line.

AI-Generated Met Gala Images Raise Concerns
This year's Met Gala saw the spread of AI-generated images featuring celebrities such as Rihanna and Katy Perry on X, despite their absence. Their realistic portrayal against the iconic backdrop hints at the utilization of AI trained on previous Met Gala events, which further fueled growing apprehensions surrounding the misuse of generative AI — especially concerning disinformation and identity theft.
Last year, Getty sued leading AI image generator, Stability AI, alleging that it had copied more than 12 million photographs from Getty's stock photography collection without permission. Getty has since launched its own AI image-generator trained on its works, but blocks attempts to generate what it describes as "problematic content."
Using generative AI while building an infrastructure that protects users is a tall order, especially as commercialization continues to grow at such an alarming rate. Experts emphasize the need for corporate accountability, universal industry standards, and effective government regulation.
As more companies use generative AI, HAND's standardized approach sets a precedent for responsible talent representation. Our ID registry ensures that AI-generated content can be traced back to legitimate sources, and respects talent rights.
Exploring Meta AI's Celebrity Image Generation Controversy
Meta recently launched its Meta AI chatbot, however, a loophole in its image-generating capabilities has already been uncovered.
Despite Meta's alleged restriction on generating images of specific individuals, a Harvard director, Jane Rosenzweig, found that the AI tracks users' keystrokes, preemptively displaying images of real-world people before queries are officially submitted. This loophole allows for the creation of images resembling celebrities if names are partially typed but not submitted.?
Meta AI's shortcomings coincide with ongoing investigations by Meta's Oversight Board into the regulation of illicit AI-generated deepfakes of women. Meta has been approached for comment on these issues. Similar concerns have been raised about comparable AI tools, such as Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot Designer, prompting increased scrutiny over the ethical use of AI-generated content.
