Tactful Ways to Navigate Tough Conversations
Ever managed a sensitive team member who just can't handle criticism? It’s a challenging situation, but in 20+ years of managing and consulting on projects, I’ve learned that a mix of empathy, experience, and a few other proven strategies can really turn things around.
Keep it in neutral
Chances are, if you’re bringing criticism to a team member, something they’re doing is impacting your project, and you’re likely feeling some kind of pressure, (especially if you have senior management breathing down your neck!)
If your team member struggles to receive feedback though, bringing your own emotional charge to the conversation will have a negative impact. Before you get started, pause and take some deep breaths. Try to approach the conversation from a neutral place.
