Handling Stress During the Holidays - Hotel Edition

Handling Stress During the Holidays - Hotel Edition

It would be easy to tell you things like, "make sure you're extra staffed" and "wear comfortable shoes," but let's be honest..the stress of the holidays in the hotel world comes from fires you constantly have to put out from unforeseen circumstances you can't necessarily prepare for. So, today, we're dropping truth nuggets to get you through one of your most busiest times of the year.

Vent Session

Find a work bestie or someone you dearly trust that you can lean on when you need to vent. The pressure will build, and you'll need to get it out so that you don't lose it on someone unexpectedly. Having that shoulder to cry on or an ear to vent to can make all the difference in the world. Just make sure to be that same person in return.

Smiling

I know, I know...when a guest is yelling at you, or an employee calls out at the last minute, the hardest thing in the world to do and even think about is smiling. BUT it's more about your surroundings. When you smile, others smile - you can change the attitude and environment of other people, which will, in turn, reflect positively on your situation as well.

Take a break

Easier said than done, I know. But taking a walk, deep breathing, and walking away from the situation, even for five minutes, will give your mental health a well-earned break. And if you haven't tried them, there are numerous mindful meditation apps that have short clips of exercises you can do when you walk, rest, or even drive to work. Check these out:

Headspace

The Calm App

Unplug

You're most likely receiving this email during the thick of the holiday season, but rest assured (pun intended) that even implementing one or two of these will drastically increase your mental health and the likelihood of not burning out.

From all of us here at Beacon Bay, we do wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season!
