Handling Holiday Stress - Part 3

Handling Holiday Stress - Part 3

So, after Part 1 and Part 2 of Handling Holiday Stress, what else can we say? How about a few tips on holiday joy?

Enjoy the lights - Take a drive after dark around your town to see the lights. You don't have to be religious to enjoy the colorful spectacle.

Get outside - There is something refreshing in the bracing cold. And at night the stars twinkling in the Winter sky seem clearer somehow.

Trees - Many pre-Christian practices are still here, like the decoration of trees with lights, ornaments and such. Even outside of homes, you can often find trees swaying in the wind with garland, balls, and other spangles.

Silence - Find some quiet and rest in it. Meditate. Let the silence enfold you.

Listen - In the silence, listen to the wisdom of your heart. What is it saying to you? Where is it telling you to go?

Retreat - Go on a retreat from the hustle and bustle, from the noise and the rushing around. Connect with your deeper Self.

New way - Open yourself to the opportunity to find a new way. Let this holiday season be a new way to experience living.

Joy - What brings you joy? As Marie Kondo says, “Cherish the things you love. Cherish Yourself.” Don't spend time on anything that drains joy.

Be Kind - To yourself.

The four weeks leading up to Christmas are called Advent, a time of spiritual preparation for the coming of a special Gift to the world. And it's not only for Christians. It's for all.

It's a sign and a reminder to Be the Gift. Be the blessing needed in the world.

Excellent list, Terry, and I'd like to add to it: donating to a non-profit in honor of folks on your gift list or volunteering for a cause about which you're passionate, singing or listening to holiday songs or just music you enjoy, and outdoor activities, such as ice skating or skiing.

Terry. I didn’t realize that Advent is a four week period for spiritual reflection leading up to Christmas. There is a similar period for Jews leading up to the Jewish New Year, a Rosh Hashana - to use the Jewish month of Elul as a period of reflection. And, as for your list. Spot on. So much of what we focus on is living our lives as if there is nothing major going on. Sometimes that’s best. And, some self-care in there is needed, and your suggestions are spot on

I really like the guidance you offer in this installment, and am especially appreciative of the reminder to be kind to oneself. Especially at this time of year, I think a lot of people struggle with this, especially those not currently employed. Having been there multiple times myself, it can be really damaging!
