Handle High Pressure Moments Like a Champ

I recently gave a talk at the California Family Childcare Network annual conference. I’ve given dozens of talks over the years to audiences of 20, 100, and even 700 participants. I’m used to it.
But this time, something got me nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. And that was scary AF.
I Hate Large Groups
As an introvert, it wasn’t always easy or enjoyable for me to speak in front of large audiences. Everyone is staring at you. Your throat gets dry, heart beats faster, and you pray your voice doesn't crack. ??
I prefer small, intimate groups instead.
Who can relate?
Public Speaking Skills
However, I learned long ago that the ability the speak publicly, including giving presentations in the workplace, is one of the top skills you must develop if you want to be recognized as a strong leader and expert in your field.
Leaders have to communicate their vision and strategies clearly and persuasively to their teams, stakeholders, and the general public. A skilled public speaker can articulate stories and ideas in a way that inspires, intrigues, and influences people’s opinions as well as behaviors.
A well delivered speech or presentation can enhance your reputation, credibility, and trustworthiness.
Because of this, I’ve been practicing and honing my skills for 2 decades. But, there are still moments of uncertainty that creep up.
We must be prepared to be unprepared.
Why I Got Nervous
A few days before the scheduled event, I discovered that my talk was going to be translated into 3 languages. It didn’t register what exactly that entailed until I stood in front of the audience and saw 3 translators spread across the room.
“Wait…you mean to tell me there are people who are going to translate to parts of the audience, while I’m speaking?” – Me
“Yes, and you will need to slow down so they can translate effectively. Periodically scan the tables with the translators, to make sure they’re grasping your message.” – The event organizer
So, not only did I need to effectively deliver my message in English, but I also needed to do it in a way that allowed for the non-English speakers to understand. Additionally, I had to avoid being distracted by multiple people talking in the audience. This felt weird.
Yikes! This was a first. Thoughts of doubt began leaping through my head. How is this going to go? ?

Regulating Emotions
It took about 30 seconds of deep breathing and walking the stage to calm my nerves and release the built up energy. I just needed to get through the opener. I reminded myself that I’ve done tougher things before.
I’ve had audiences before that didn’t want me there. I’ve been cut off mid presentation and asked to leave before. I’ve been asked tough questions on stage that I haven’t always had a good answer to.
I’ve done harder things than this. All these thoughts are happening quickly, as I de-escalate emotions of fear and anxiety.
I can figure it out as I go.
I looked out at the faces staring back at me. Then it hit me. I'm here for them, not to perform. As long as I do my best with an intention to leave them inspired, educated, and perhaps entertained even, then it will be fantastic.
Let's Go
“This is my car key,” I said as I held up my key chain for the audience to see. “Without it, I can’t drive my car. It’s important that I have it with me if I want my car to work. But there was a time that even this key could not help me...” I opened the talk with a story and settled into the space I was in.
The audience smiled with intrigue. “This is going to be fun,” I thought as I smiled back.
Call to Action
Recall a time when you felt extreme pressure and handled it like a champ. Perhaps, you were put on the spot or asked to do something you’ve never done before.
If any part of this resonated with you, let me know! I'd love to hear from you.
To your success,
Sonia
