A $42 billion dollar industry is certainly not one to overlook. This is what the handheld POS market is projected to grow to, by 2025.?

Point of Sale (POS) systems serve as the hardware backbone within the tourism industry, as they offer much more than mere transactional capabilities. For tour operators, an effective POS system is indispensable providing adherence to regulatory standards, meticulous revenue management, and providing critical insights into consumer behaviour. We understand the importance of effective hardware and the importance for it to have the ability to sell on the street, sell at a box office and provide access and control management for security.?

As part of a six-part series, we look at the evolving landscape of terminal and hardware solutions that are pivotal to the tourism ticketing industry and what role Ventrata plays.

Currently, there is an escalating demand for handled POS devices, especially in the tourism industry with its dynamic and mobile requirements. Ventrata stands at the forefront of this growth, offering a suite of cutting-edge handheld POS systems tailored to enhance the operational efficacy and customer engagement of tour operators and attractions. When we talk about a capable handheld POS we refer to one that has the ability to have additional peripherals added to it, such as integrated printer, scanner and the possibility to process card payments.

Our handheld POS journey began with the introduction of a system integrating the iPhone SE with the Verifone E315 payment cradle and Star Micronics SM-230i printer, all operating on Native iOS in Swift. This set the stage for mobility and efficiency solution.

The subsequent iteration aimed to expand platform accessibility with a Native Android system in Java, though it remained unreleased. After this, we had a significant transition to Sunmi P2/Pro, and moved towards React Native for a more unified application development experience.?

The third version of our handheld POS ushered in the use of the Pax A920, adopting Flutter and Dart for a seamless, cross-platform user interface, complemented by Kotlin for robust Android development. The latest version, introduced the PAX A920Pro and Castles S1F2/S1F2L, maintaining the versatile development environment of its predecessor while extending support to iOS and Web platforms.

Currently, at Ventrata more than 52% of our customers have an active hardware solutions of which 36% utilise the handheld POS option. This shows the importance of mobile POS devices and the role they play in a complete ticketing solution. A mobile POS solution is critical to our Hop-on Hop-off operators as it provides them with the on street selling capabilities however a number of our fixed location customer also utilise these devices to reduce waiting times and increase the customer satisfaction when they have larger waiting lines allowing them to go to the client and disperse the load over a number of POS devices. In these instances, the ability for the hardware to communicate and be backed by a robust software is vital.

This evolution and continuous support, demonstrates the importance Ventrata places on reliable hardware, and adapting to emerging trends and technological advancements to equip the tourism ticketing industry with the most efficient solutions.?
